Olympia reigns
Spartans post 9-0, 2-1 sweep of Limestone in softball showdown

BARTONVILLE —
With a combined 31-1 record going into Wednesday’s doubleheader, the
Olympia and Limestone softball teams met with area supremacy on the line.
When the diamond dust settled, visiting Olympia reigned supreme. The
Spartans scored a 9-0 win in the opener and followed with a 2-1 victory to
hand Limestone its first losses of the season.
“I thought the girls really came to play today,” Olympia coach Al
Toliver said. “Limestone is a very good program and they were real
excited about playing today.”
Toliver notched his 400th win at the school in Game 1 thanks to a Spartans
power surge. Laura Canopy had a grand slam and Keri Leach added two homers
in the nine-run rout.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Canopy ripped a shot
over the center-field fence for a 4-0 lead.
“We worked in practice with her lifting the ball, and it paid off
tonight,” Toliver said.
Kara Usherwood had an RBI triple for Olympia (18-1) in the fourth before
Leach had a solo homer in the fifth and a three-run shot in the sixth.
“They were all over the ball and had a great day at the plate,”
Limestone coach Leanne Bonifas said. “Hats off to them. They were
whacking the ball.”
Limestone (15-2) had a throwing error and two wild pitches in the fifth
inning of Game 2. The mistakes led to Olympia’s two runs in the game as
Hailey Haning had an RBI single and later came around to score.
Limestone’s Kristen Cooper walked to start the bottom of the sixth and
scored three batters later on a wild pitch. The Rockets put two runners on
base in the seventh, but couldn’t plate either one.
“We had some miscues, and that is uncharacteristic,” Bonifas said.
“We’re not happy losing two games in one day. But is it shameful to
lose two to Olympia? Absolutely not.”
Leach, Dani Williams and Courtney Martin were strong on the mound for
Olympia. They were helped by an errorless team defensive effort.
“They’ve done that all year long. We’re averaging about an error
every couple games,” Toliver said. “I’m real excited about our
defense. Obviously (Leach) is very good in the circle, and if you put good
pitching with good defense, you know you have a chance to be in every
game.”

Olympia softball coach Al Toliver wins 400th, 401st games
By Pantagraph staff
Olympia High School softball coach Al Toliver won his 400th and 401st games as
the Spartans’ coach Wednesday thanks to a doubleheader sweep of host
Bartonville Limestone by scores of 9-0 and 2-1.
Toliver, now 401-68-3 at Olympia, watched first-game winner Keri Leach (13-1)
help her cause with two home runs, a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run swat
in the sixth. Laura Canopy chipped in a third-inning grand slam.
Dani Williams (5-0) pitched the Spartans (18-1) to victory in the nightcap,
scattering three hits over four shut-out innings. Hailley Haning had two of
Olympia’s five hits.
Toliver, who coached two seasons at Central Catholic before a 13-year stay in
Stanford, improved his career record to 421-91-3.
Toliver’s Olympia teams have made seven Elite Eight appearances, winning Class
A state titles in 2002 and 2003 and placing second in 2001 and 2008.

SJ-O offense sputters vs. state's best
By: Lucas Deal
May 30, 2009 11:05:58 PM CDT
PAXTON – The St. Joseph-Ogden softball team spent the season feeding off
its offense, scoring runs in bunches en route to a 31-2 record.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, in one of the few games they couldn't score,
their opponent sure could.
Top-ranked Olympia banged out 14 hits and scored in five of six innings to
roll past fourth-ranked SJ-O 11-0 in the Class 2A Paxton Sectional championship
Saturday.
"They're an awfully good ballclub," SJ-O coach Randy Wolken said.
"I didn't see any weaknesses in their team, and they seemed to do
everything right."
In a battle of state championship programs, the Spartans from McLean County
established their dominance almost immediately.
Olympia (34-2) recorded at least one hit in every inning and already led 5-0
before Hannah Bowen singled off Keri Leach in the fourth to become SJ-O's first
base runner.
"Our girls fought all game, but we were just overmatched," Wolken
said.
"It's a tough sectional draw, but we had to play them sometime."
After struggling with her control during the sectional semifinals against
Monticello, Leach was masterful against SJ-O (31-3).
She allowed two hits to Bowen and a pair of walks for the game, striking out
two in picking up her 26th win.
Jenna Slifer (22-2) was pinned with the loss for SJ-O, though all three
Spartans pitchers gave up runs against the Olympia attack.
"This team has kind of worked like that all year," Olympia coach Al
Toliver said. "Anywhere in the order, we're very capable of scoring, and
when you score in almost every inning like today, you like your chances."
Wolken said the loss will be tough for his team in the next few days but
thinks his young players can learn from it before next season.
Losing to a school with a 418-69 record and four state championship-game
appearances over the past 13 years is at least a quality loss.
"If they're not the best team in the state, I'd hate to play the best
team in the state," Wolken said. "They looked awfully good
today."

Olympia
softball routs Teutopolis
CHARLESTON -- Olympia High School’s 14-0, five-inning victory over Teutopolis
took 1 hour, 20 minutes Monday at Eastern
Illinois University’s Williams Park.
Spartans’ senior pitcher Keri Leach
was working under a different timetable. By her calculations, the Charleston
Class 2A Super-Sectional win was a year in the making.
A 13-2 loss to Carterville in last June’s state championship game made this a
journey, not a one-day event.
“Ever since we lost, I was looking forward to right now,” said Leach,
shortly after striking out 10 in a no-hitter. “Winning state is our big goal.
We make a list of goals, and that’s our last one. Hopefully, we can go get
that goal.”
The top-ranked Spartans (35-2) advanced to a state semifinal against Coal City
at 4:30 p.m. Friday at EastSide Centre in East
Peoria. It is Olympia’s eighth state tournament trip in 11 years.
“They’re really focused,” Olympia coach Al Toliver said of his players.
“They’ve wanted to get back to state all year after last year. And, now
we’re back.”
The
Spartans got there behind Leach and a 14-hit attack. They also took
advantage of four errors by Teutopolis (31-6), including three in Olympia’s
seven-run third.
“One of the reasons we got here was through playing good, solid, routine
defense,” Teutopolis coach Rich Niebrugge said. “We did not make the routine
defensive plays today, and
that showed.”
Leach (27-1), a Tulsa recruit, struck out the final six batters she faced. A
two-out walk to Bailey Kroeger in the second kept her from a perfect game.
A leaping catch of Courtney Heuerman’s line drive by third
baseman Kara Usherwood preserved the no-hitter in the bottom of the
third.
“In warmups I was a little nervous because I wasn’t throwing as hard as I
normally do,” Leach said. “But once I got out there, I knew my defense would
work for me, so I just felt more calm.”
Leach helped her cause with a triple, double and three RBIs. Usherwood, Courtney
Martin, Laura Canopy and Shelby Batterton also had two hits for Olympia, which
has outscored its postseason opponents 59-2.
“Usually after one time through the order here in the postseason the girls
have really been scoring a lot of runs in the third, fourth, fifth innings,” Toliver
said.
Leigha Light (18-4), the first of three Teutopolis pitchers, took the loss.

Softball round-up: No-hitter propels Oly to 2A state semifinal
Journal Star

CHARLESTON — The Olympia softball team is returning to state in
style.
Keri Leach struck out 10 and pitched a five-ining no-hitter Monday as
Olympia beat Teutopolis 14-0 in the Class 2A Charleston Supersectional.
The victory at Eastern Illinois University sends the Spartans (35-2) back
to the state finals, where they finished second last season.
This time, Olympia will face Coal City in the state semifinals at 4:30
p.m. Friday at EastSide Centre in East Peoria. The winner plays at 7 p.m.
Saturday for the state title, and the loser plays at 4:30 p.m. for third
place.
“When you have 14 hits and a no-hitter, I’d say you have a pretty good
chance,’’ Olympia coach Al Toliver said about his team’s victory
over T-Town (31-6).
Kara Usherwood made a leaping catch along the third-base line in the third
inning to preserve the no-no. Toliver said that was the hardest-hit ball
T-Town had all night.
Olympia scored seven in the third inning, thanks to five hits and three
T-Town errors.
Taylor Hanes had three RBIs for the Spartans.
At Dakota
United’s Class 1A supersectional game against the hosts was postponed
because of rain. The game has been rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Olympia star pitches no-hitter in
super-sectional at Eastern
BY BRIAN NIELSEN, Sports Editor
CHARLESTON -- To think Keri Leach is not even
supposed to pitch in college.
Teutopolis might have a hard time understanding that after the Stanford Olympia
senior fired a no-hitter on Monday.
Then again, the fact that Leach is headed to Tulsa as position player is not so
hard to comprehend either.
She helped her own cause with a triple and a double as the state’s top-ranked
Class 2A softball team needed just five innings to beat the Lady Wooden Shoes
14-0 by the 10-run mercy rule in the IHSA Charleston Super-Sectional at Eastern
Illinois’ Williams Field.
“I’m going to say they are far and away the best team we’ve faced,”
Teutopolis coach Rich Niebrugge said. “Keri Leach is a fantastic player.”
She is one on a mission with this Olympia team that finished second in last
year’s state finals to Carterville.
“Ever since we lost last year I wanted to get back,” Leach said.
Olympia, 35-2, is headed back to East Peoria to play Coal City in a Friday state
semifinal.
Nothing recently has really stood in the way of the Lady Spartans, who won both
of their sectional games last week by 11-0 scores and made this super-sectional
win even more convincing against a Teutopolis team that had avenged a regular
season loss in Saturday’s Newton Sectional final by beating a Casey-Westfield
program that won seven state championships in the 1986 through ’99 era.
Olympia, which won 2002 and ’03 state titles, had handled Casey rather easily
earlier this season but had to get a quick scouting report on Teutopolis, which
made its first super-sectional appearance last year.
“I hadn’t seen them play,” Olympia coach Al Toliver said. “We had a
common opponent in Casey. We knew we needed to keep their leadoff batter off the
bases.”
Leach did retire Teutopolis’ Courtney Heuerman on both of her plate
appearances but needed a diving catch of a line drive by third baseman Kara
Usherwood in the third inning to do so and preserve the no-hitter.
“I thought it was going to be either a hit or a foul ball,” Leach said. “I
had to thank her.”
Teutopolis’ only base runner was Bailey Kroeger, who drew a two-out walk in
the second inning against Leach, who recorded 10 strikeouts in the mercy-rule
shortened game.
As if Olympia needed any help, Teutopolis committed four errors to add to
Olympia’s 14-hit attack.
“This was not our best game,” Niebrugge said. “We didn’t play our best
defensively. That’s what got us here. We generally made the routine plays. We
didn’t make the routine plays today. But Stanford Olympia is an excellent
team. They are always attacking the ball.”
That put an end to Teutopolis’ season at 31-6.
“Today you’ve got your heart set on going to state,” Niebrugge said.
“But I’m not sure how many people expected this team to win 31 games.
That’s a testament to these girls. We lost four girls who went to play college
softball but they came back this year and wanted to do well again.”

Decade of dominance

By BEN DIGGLE & ADAM DUVALL
Journal Star

PEORIA —
Seven hundred wins.
That’s how many victories the Olympia softball and baseball teams have
combined for over the last 11 seasons. Basic English grammar rules dictate
that it be spelled out, but it’s such an impressive total that it
deserves the respect of being spelled out. Perhaps even more impressive is
the Spartans’ winning percentage. With a combined overall record of
700-129-5, the squads win games at an 84 percent clip.
Over that decade-plus of dominance, the Spartans have combined to make 13
appearances at their respective IHSA state finals and brought home six
trophies.
“I think there’s several common themes,” Olympia baseball coach Ron
Smith said. “But the biggest one in my mind is that we start our kids
young and they play together for a long time.”
Journal Star writers Ben Diggle and Adam Duvall examine some of the
Spartans’ shared highs and lows over the course of the last decade.
2002
In 2002, each Olympia program was making its
third consecutive appearance at the state finals. They were both denied
trophies in their first two visits, but finally broke through and claimed
Class A state championships just minutes apart on June 1, 2002.
Baseball
Prior to the Spartans’ Elite Eight game, head coach Ron Smith sat his
team down and asked a simple question: Do you want me to set up the
pitching rotation to trophy or set it up to win a state title?
State championship was the unanimous choice and after Cam Cheek and Ryan
Kendrick pitched the Spartans into the title game, sophomore Tyler
Thornton made history.
After surrendering a three-run home in the first, Thornton pitched a
one-hitter the rest of the way as Olympia claimed a 4-3 victory in eight
innings. Thornton finished with seven strikeouts and three walks and was
named State Finals MVP.
“After he gave up that home run in the first, I wondered whether he
would make it out of the inning,” Olympia coach Ron Smith said. “I
went out and had a talk with him on the mound and after that, he was
lights out and the rest is history.”
Softball
It was familiar territory for Olympia. The Spartans had lost in the 2001
Class A title game, 3-0 to Nashville. But this year Oly was back to the
big game.
And this time...
“It was just a pressure packed game,” Olympia coach Al Toliver said of
the 2-1, 10 inning win over Carrollton.
“It was just two good teams going at it. Extra innings. Anything could
happen. It was just an exciting time.”
Toliver credits his pitcher, Jessie Shay for coming up big. The junior
stranded two runners in eighth inning and retired the bottom of the 10th
in order.
“She worked out some of the tough situations in the game,” Toliver
said. “She kept it close all the way and just gave us an opportunity to
win.”
Olympia went on to win the 2003 title as well going 41-2 that season.
2004
After winning it all on the same day two years
earlier, both Spartan squads were upset on May 24, 2004. The baseball team
suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat to rival Deer Creek-Mackinaw, while
Normal U-High blanked the softball team 5-0 to end the Spartans run at a
third consecutive state championship.
Baseball
In the top of the eighth inning, Dee-Mack pitcher Matt Herrick reached on
a fielder’s choice, although Smith argued that Herrick should have been
out thanks to interference at second base.
The next batter, Cody Frietsch, doubled to left-center field and to
further compound the problem, the Olympia left fielder kicked the ball as
he tried to pick it up. That allowed Herrick to score the game-winning run
all the way from first base.
“Unfortunately, I remember it quite well,” Smith said. “But that’s
baseball.
“Those things happen and in the Illinois postseason, it’s
one-and-done.”
The Dee-Mack victory spoiled a fantastic outing by Tyler Thornton. Then a
senior and headed to Bradley University, Thornton strikes out 15 and walks
just three in his final game as a Spartan.
Softball
There was no getting past Normal U-High.
After dropping a 3-2 game in April, the Pioneers responded with two wins
in a span of eight days.
First, U-High won 2-0 to blemish Olympia’s perfect Corn Belt Conference
record. Next, the Pioneers used the arm of sophomore Kellie Kinsella to
grab a 5-0 regional title win.
“That was a good U-High team that year,” Toliver said. “We knew they
were very capable (of beating us). They got the job done.”
Olympia didn’t help its cause any, stranding eight runners on base
including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.
The 2006 Journal Star Player of the Year Lindsay Watkins came to pitch in
relief. Watkins, a sophomore at the time, hurled 4 2/3 innings, giving up
one run and scattering three hits.
“You’d like to go every year (to state) but realistically, it’s not
likely,” Toliver said.
2008
Once again, the Olympia softball and baseball
teams found themselves at the IHSA state finals, but there would be no
shared championship this time. The baseball team wins it second state
championship with a 6-1 victory over Illinois Valley Central in Class 2A.
The softball team, meanwhile, finds itself on the wrong end of a 13-2 loss
to Carterville in the Class 2A state-championship game.
Baseball
Nature was determined to etch its name in the record books of this
tournament from the start.
Olympia’s 4-1 semifinal win over Coal City was shortened to five innings
by a deluge that left water standing all over Silver Cross Field. Illinois
Valley Central’s semifinal against Pinckneyville was postponed to
Saturday morning.
Saturday broke clear and beautiful and it ended with fireworks peppering a
starry sky as Olympia celebrated a 6-1 win over IVC in the state title
game.
Much like Tyler Thornton did in 2002, an Olympia hurler made a name for
himself. Matt Frahm, a 6-foot-6 junior, held a potent IVC offense to just
one run on six hits and struck out seven.
“After the 2004 season, I did a little bit of a reassessment,” coach
Ron Smith said. “I realized that probably 65-70 percent of the teams in
Illinois would love to win 25 games in a season.
“That gave me peace of mind and it helped me remember not to take
seasons like 2008 for granted.”
Softball
It was supposed to be the perfect night.
Just like 2002: two titles, one school, all the same night.
But the storybook ending ran into a Carterville team that could hit.
And score runs.
The Lions set an all-class title game record for runs in its 13-2 win in
the inaugural Class 2A title game.
“We ran into a Carterville team who had been knocking at the door for a
couple years in a row and they really wanted it and got the job done,”
Oly coach Al Toliver said.
Carterville scored 10 straight runs after leading 3-2 following the fourth
inning.
The Spartans came in on a nine-game win streak and were looking to grab
their first title since 2003.
“Well, we played extremely well all the way through to the last game,”
Toliver said. “We just didn’t have our best game, the last game.”

IHSA Class 2A state softball finals at a glance
At EastSide Centre, East Peoria
Olympia (35-2) vs. Coal City (32-2)
WHEN: 4:30 p.m.
OUTLOOK: This is Olympia’s eighth appearance in the
state finals. The Spartans have a mix of great pitching (team ERA 0.74),
batting (team BA .385) and defense. But what may be the most impressive
state is the Spartan’s postseason run production. Olympia has outscored
opponents 62-2 in its five game while scoring 11 or more four times. Coal
City is making its first state finals appearance. Sr. P and DePaul recruit
Kirsten Verdun (30-2, 424 Ks, 0.28 ERA) may give the potent Oly offense
some trouble. Verdun is also batting .524 with 42 RBIs and 6 HRs.
ADAM DUVALL’S PICK: Olympia
Savanna West Carroll (31-8) vs. Piasa Southwestern (27-3)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
OUTLOOK: West Carroll is making its first state finals
appearance while the Birds are making their fourth. Last year’s
fourth-place finisher, Piasa Southwestern is riding a 10-game win streak
but is hitting .290 as a team. The Thunder are led by So. P Jordan Kasbohm
(19-4, 221 Ks, 0.74), who no-hit Canton in Monday’s supersectional.
Leading the WC offense will be Kasbohm (.347 BA, 32 RBIs), Jennesa Miller
(.375, 39 RBIs) and Katie Wiersema (.367, 39 RBIs).
ADAM DUVALL’S PICK: Piasa Southwestern
THIRD: Coal City

Double victory capped with celebration at Olympia High School
By Pantagraph staff
STANFORD -- Olympia High School celebrated their double victory with a rally at
the school Sunday. Their baseball team won its second straight championship
Saturday, 8-1, at Silver Cross Field in Joliet. The softball team won a 9-1
title game victory at EastSide Centre in East Peoria. |
“We have two very dedicated and passionate coaches who work very hard at their
jobs.” said Mike Lootens, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.
“We have an excellent group of players, of course, with fine support in their
families. The boys have three state championships and the first back to back in
almost 50 years.”
Maine Township of Des Plaines was the last - and only - Illinois high school to
win back-to-back state titles in 1958-1959.
“Winning two state championships is awesome but even that we have two back to
back is just amazing, said senior Logan Leesman. “It hasn’t been done in 50
years. I hope we can do it again.”
“After the game it was really exciting,” said junior softball player Shelby
Batterton.
“We really wanted to win. After leaving last year with a 2nd place we were
determined this year to make it all the way. Our seniors were very determined.
It was unreal. I’m glad we made it.”
